Bryan Appleyard was educated at Bolton School and King’s College, Cambridge and after graduating with a degree in English. He was Financial News Editor and Deputy Arts Editor at The Times from 1976 to 1984. Subsequently he became a freelance journalist and author. He is a three-time Feature Writer of the Year award winner and has been commended four times in the British Press Awards.
Currently he is a special feature writer, commentator, reviewer and columnist for The Sunday Times. He also writes for the New Statesman, Vanity Fair and Intelligent Life and Prospect. He has also written for, among other publications, The New York Times, The Spectator, The Daily Telegraph, The Times, The Independent, The Tablet, The Times Literary Supplement, Literary Review and The Sun.
